Exploring Bristol – From Historical To Contemporary, It's All Here!
Otherwise known as the Gateway to the West Country, Bristol lies just 13 miles as the crow flies from historical Bath. The city has long been used as a central point from which to explore surrounding areas, however for those in the know, it houses a wealth of historical and contemporary attractions which also makes it the perfect tourist destination. Let's take a look at what's on offer.

Historic Bristol
Bristol has long been an important trading post that linked the UK to so called 'new worlds'. So much so that in 1542 it was granted 'city' status. Right up until the industrial revolution anything and everything was passing through Bristol docks including grain, wine, wool and even slaves. To this end the docks are an important part of the heritage of the city. Today visitors can see the remnants of a time that once was. It was from here that John Cabot set sail to colonise new lands and the great industrial revolutionist, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, designed the stunning Clifton Suspension Bridge and the SS Great Britain (the world's first iron-hulled steam powered transatlantic ship) which attract visitors in their droves. In addition to the docks, the city boasts some stunning architecture which is everywhere you turn, such as the Tudor grandeur of Ashton Court and the Regency splendour of John Nash's Blaise Hamlet, whilst modern buildings sit comfortably next to old.

Modern Bristol
Aside from the wealth of historical buildings and interesting sites, Bristol also boasts many contemporary attractions. Visitors to 'At-Bristol' (which was built on the rejuvenated dock area) can have fun at the interactive state of the art centre whilst learning all about the world we live in. The M-Shed is a modern contemporary museum of life and history built out of an old 1950's dockside transit shed. Perhaps one of the most famous exponents of contemporary Bristol is of course the elusive street artist Banksy. Why not take a tour and see some of his work. Love it or hate it, you can't help but admire the talent.

Bristol night scene
From old fashioned boozers to trendy bars and from five star dining through to top takeaways, Bristol has it all. Whatever scene you're into there is an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, and clubs to suit all tastes. For those who love live music, then Colston Hall hosts some of the country's finest musicians and if you fancy dancing the night away in a club, then there are plenty to choose from.

Bristol makes for a great travel destination and with superb road and rail links there really is no excuse not to visit.
