Set on the edge of the bustling village of High Littleton in rolling Somerset countryside, Penny Cottage dates back to 1860. This holiday hideaway lies just nine miles from the centre of Bath , the jewel of Southwest England, and ten miles from Bristol with its scores of cultural and historical attractions. The terraced cottage was christened during renovations, when the owners found a couple of old pennies under the floorboards. More old pennies from charity and antique shops dating from 1863 have been added and put up in frames around the cottage. There are now 10 of them. Numerous public footpaths branch out from the village. A short walk up the lane toward Mearns puts you on the path to the nearby pretty village of Timsbury, and takes in great views of the rolling countryside. The Greyfield Colliery, which once stood on the other side of the village from Penny Cottage, has left its name to Greyfield’s Wood, a beautiful and well-cared for Woodland Trust site that conceals a secret waterfall, sometimes jokingly referred to as the Niagara Falls of Somerset. Also within easy reach are the cathedral town of Wells, atmospheric Glastonbury, the geological wonders of Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge, the beauties of the Chew Valley and the Mendip Hills, plus a host of English villages such as Chew Magna, Pensford, Timsbury and Bishop Sutton. Shops, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
