Clwyd is located in north Wales and is a popular destination for day trippers from Merseyside, Cheshire and Shropshire, all of which share borders with the county. The region has many areas of outstanding natural beauty, activities to suit all ages and castles and other buildings of historical significance.

No visit to anywhere in Wales would be complete without exploring some castles, and Clwyd is no exception. There is a choice of several castles in the region, some better preserved than others. Ruthin Castle, one of the oldest in the country, has a history dating back to 1277, although it has mostly been rebuilt over the years after it was destroyed in 1648. In recent years the castle has become a hotel and is the ideal place for weddings as the castle serves as a grand backdrop for official wedding photography. Ewloe Castle is now just ruins but it is a beautiful spot to visit. A climb up to the top of the tower affords amazing views across the countryside. This hidden gem is off the tourist trail but really should not be missed.

Clwyd is popular with families looking for really cost effective holidays. There are  lots of holiday accommodations to choose from along the coast, particularly Prestatyn, Rhyl and Towyn. Prestatyn’s Ffrith beach is a lovely long sandy beach with several water sports on offer including windsurfing, jet skiing and sailing. It is a great family friendly beach that also allows dogs. Rhyl is a very popular beach so can get really busy in the height of the summer. Dogs are restricted on this beach but there are a wide range of facilities here as it is a bigger holiday resort. Towyn beach is shingle so can be hurtful underfoot. It is advisable to keep any footwear on while on this beach. Dogs are allowed on this beach but there is no lifeguard service, so caution must be taken when swimming.

Colwyn Bay is perhaps one of the best known seaside towns in Clwyd; it is certainly one of the most popular. This is possibly due to the fact there is so much to see and do here, it is ideal for visitors of all ages. The beach is lovely and not too overcrowded, there are theatres for evening entertainment and even several golf courses nearby. Colwyn Bay is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding areas including Llandudno. The little known Dyserth Falls are fun to explore, and a trip to Bodelwyddan Castle is a must do excursion.
