There is also a licensed restaurant on site. The property is 3 miles from the historic town of Bampton, which has an interesting range of shops. Dulverton, 5 miles away, is well-known as ‘the gateway to Exmoor’. Exmoor National Park offers wonderful opportunities to walk on the open moorland and in the wooded river valleys. Haddon Hill and Wimbleball Lake are also just a few miles away and offer walking, riding, fishing and other recreational pursuits. West Country authors bring our landscape to life on the page. Richard Blackmoor with Lorna Doone has to be one of the greatest locally. Of the modern writers Marcia Willet is the most published, including ‘The Summerhouse’ set near Bossington, ‘Mormories of the Storm’ set around Dulverton and ‘The Birdcage’. Hope Bourne has three fabulous books about her life on Exmoor, a wonderful lady with true artistic skills. Located in the Exe Valley, there are walks to Oakford and Bampton, as well as circular walks taking in Exebridge and Stoodleigh. Exmoor, north Devon and west Somerset are great areas for wildlife, visit Porlock Vale and the Owl and Hawk Centre, enjoy badger watching at Stoodleigh, or take an Exmoor Wildlife safari across the moors.
