Located in the village of Ainsdale, a semi rural suburb of Southport, this cosy mid terraced cottage provides comfortable holiday accommodation, ideal for families and couples who want to explore all that the north west of England has to offer, both coast and country.
Ainsdale village has several pubs, restaurants, shops and takeaways which are all within half a mile of the cottage. It also has a boating lake, leisure centre and village green.
The village has a strong sense of community and every year at the start of July, the Ainsdale Horticultural Society holds a village show.
Ainsdale also has a fabulous beach, which is said to have some of the most breath-taking sunsets and cloudscapes in the whole country.
A great base for walkers and nature lovers, the Sefton Coastal Path and the Trans Pennine Trail both pass through Ainsdale. A number of waymarked nature trails are also accessible from the village. These trails allow access to the Ainsdale Sand Dunes, designated as one of England’s National Nature Reserves. The dunes are home to over 450 plant species as well as the rare natterjack toad, Europe’s loudest amphibian. Red squirrels can occasionally be seen amongst the reserve’s pine forests too, while sand lizards, great-crested newts and a fantastic variety of orchids and other wildflowers can also be found here.
The reserve has a network of around 8 miles of marked footpaths including the Woodland Path and Fisherman’s Path which are both accessible by bike, pushchairs and wheelchairs. The paths can also be used to access an award winning pub and restaurant after a long walk.
There are several golf clubs nearby including Royal Birkdale, Hillside, Southport and Ainsdale, and Formby Hall.
The Victorian seaside town of Southport is just 4 miles away and apart from its beach, fairground and waterpark also offers a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. The livelier resort of Blackpool with its famous tower, zoo, Pleasure Beach, Sea Life Centre and Madame Tussauds, is 35 miles away. Other places on the coast worth visiting include the cosmopolitan resort of Lytham St Annes and Crosby beach.
Liverpool can be reached in approximately half an hour by car and Chester, Manchester and Preston are all under an hour’s drive. The Lake District and Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley can be reached in approximately 90 minutes.
For those who want a break from driving, the cottage has excellent links to public transport. There is a bus stop on the main road with services into Southport, Preston and Liverpool. Royal Birkdale Golf Club offers an unparalleled experience that is hard to beat, it is evident once you play why it is so highly regarded, a little expensive but worth every penny.
Hillside Golf Club is located in the close proximity to Southport along the beautiful Northwest coastline of English. The club has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1911 and has the accolade of hosting many prestigious competitions. It is an 18 hole, par 72 championship links course that will challenge all level of golfer. There are many obstacles to overcome on this course from the towering pines, ponds and shrubbery, blustering winds from the Irish Sea, imposing sandhills and dunes, as well as thick rough. It is a very scenic course in particular the back nine holes that enjoy a slightly elevated position that makes the most of the stunning surroundings. The course is well designed in that no two holes are the same, it is in marvellous condition with a tough tight track, flat and true greens and lovely fairways. Fairhaven Golf Club is not only a beautiful golf course but, is also recognised a one of the premier courses in Northern England. It is not your standard championship course being a mix of parkland and links and is for the most part flat and easy going, although watch out the hazards including the resident pheasant, famous deep bunkers and woods. Fairhaven will accommodate all level of golf player from novice to low handicappers. The course is brilliantly maintained and you will find the greens to be fast and slick, and the greens are receptive. You are assured the highest standards when you play here, from the warm welcome you receive, to the staff, through to facilities and the course. RSPB Marshside is a lovely coastal reserve and is one of the premier places for wildlife in the UK, it is home to a plethora of marsh and sea birds and other animals who have made this natural habitat their home. Regardless of the season that you visit there is lots to see and always different birds in residence. There are two hides, both are glazed and one is heated, a viewing platform and three viewing screens located here, as well as an information centre. The reserve is open daily from 8.30am to 5.00pm and there is no charge for entry although they do rely on donations to maintain and continue with their work here. The volunteers are really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and will happily discuss the different birds to be found here. In addition there is lots of information on display around the hide. There is a visitor book where you can record what birds you have seen here. They run a number of events throughout the year including an introduction to birdwatching, tide walks and much more. There are footpaths that go along the old sea-wall and coast path, they extend to 1.8m, 2.5m and 4.3m and make for a pleasant walk. The whole are is so peaceful and tranquil and affords great photo opportunities so make sure to take along your camera. RSPB Marshside is a fantastic spot to take a walk, get fresh air, peace and tranquillity and see some amazing wildlife, great for all ages and makes for a brilliant day out in the outdoors.

Hesketh Park is conveniently located just a mile from the town of Southport, it is a beautiful 12 hectare Victorian Park that is open for all to enjoy. This public park is formed by gardens and ornate fountains that have underwent restoration and improvement to return them to their original glory. The park is well maintained and has a number of features including the American Garden, the Clock Garden, the Specimen Garden, the Herbaceous Walk and the Mixed Flower Garden, a conservatory and lake where you can feed the ducks. There are also a number of amenities including public toilets, a mini golf course, cafe, childrens playground and lots of wonderful walking trails. The children will love the freedom to run around and there are lots of opportunities to play a game of hide and seek. The cafe is warm and welcoming and serves a nice selection of beverages and hot and cold snacks, as well as delicious ice-creams. They host a diverse programme of films with everything from big budget movies to art house films and everything in between. Tickets are very reasonably priced as well as the confectionery and sundries they sell. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The seats are comfortable and the screens are ample in size to give a real cinema feel. Island Cinemas is a delightful small cinema that is excellently priced and makes for a great day out for everyone.

This large market has three different areas and has a diverse selection of stalls that include food, quality clothing and household goods all at competitive prices. Wepre Park is located in Connah's Quay and is made up of 160 acres of ancient woodland and green spaces. The park is well maintained and kept clean and tidy. The woodland walk area is dense and pretty, quite mystical in places, there are lots of walks to choose from that differ in length, a small stream runs through the woods that can be paddled in at parts and there are cliffs that children love to climb, as well as the beautiful waterfall. Within the woods is Ewloe castle a 13th century ruin it offers a nice spot to have a picnic and explore. Wepre Park offers a fun and free outdoor environment that the whole family can enjoy, plenty of open spaces to run around in and enjoy as well as the other facilities. Wepre Park makes for a great day out for all whatever time of the year, highly recommended.

They operate a number of experiences where you can get up close to the birds of prey and you can appreciate their beauty and majesty, they offer both individual and group sessions and range from an hour to several days in duration. Art with a Heart, Arts Centre is an arts and heritage project in the community, with the purpose of raising awareness and promoting the arts to everyone. The gallery is bright and airy and has a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere. It is also home to an impressive local exhibition consisting of maps, dating back to 1876, interesting artefacts and photos illustrating the changes to the town over the years. It is a great starting point for young and emerging artists as they offer them the opportunity to display their works. The staff are brilliant, they are friendly, knowledgeable and animated about the exhibits on display here. The standard of works on display here is very good and diverse, there will be something to appeal to everyone from the varied collection of works on show. They also run a range of activities that are great for entertaining both young and older visitors. If in Altrincham take some time out to visit this lovely centre you will not be disappointed and might even find something special to take home.

The Plaza Cinema is an independent venue that is run by volunteers. It was established in 1939 but was immediately closed due to regulations enforced due to the start of the war the very same day. Plans were being made to redevelop the site in 1995, but a local 12 year old school boy started an effort to save the landmark. The Birkenhead Heritage Tramway plays a pivotal role in the preservation of the trams without the society these beautiful vehicles would no longer be. Their dedication and hard work has resulted in more than half a dozen tram cars being rescued and lovingly restored to their original condition. Today their collection demonstrates the growth of Britains first tramways that were operated by horse, to steam tram and right through to a fully enclosed electric bogie car. Also found here are a single deck continental tram as well as an overhead maintenance wagon dating to the 1940's, in addition to a great collection of all things transport related including bikes, a model railway, transport signs, plaques and even an old bus stop . These historic and impressive vehicles ride along the mile long Wirral Heritage Tramway, the driver and conductor are dressed in period costume, it is a unique experience and you can enjoy the lovely views of Liverpools waterfront as you trundle and judder along. There is a small charge to ride the trams, the museum is free to enter. They organise special events and themed events throughout the year, it is worth keeping an eye out for these they are fun and entertaining for all the family. People of all ages and interests will enjoy a visit to The Birkenhead Tramways, it is fantastic to see these vehicles working and to learn all about their history. The volunteers here are wonderful really friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will happily show you around and entertain you with their stories. Wirral Transport Museum is located in Taylor Street in Birkenhead and was established to preserve the historic influence of trams here in the town. Birkenhead was the first place in England to endorse a street tramway back in 1901 and these were a familiar sight until 1937 when they ceased to operate. This intimate museum is home to a wonderful collection of vintage transport vehicles, including a selection of tram cars, local buses, cars, motorbikes, a model railway and lots of transport memorabilia and artefacts such as transport signs, a bus stop, maps, books, photos and much more. There is lots of information available on the exhibits. Volunteers are responsible for the restoration of the vehicles and the running of the museum and they do a fabulous job, they are really hard working, and you will find them to be friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and passionate, they are more then happy to answer any questions you might have. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, in addition it opens on bank holidays and during the school holidays, there is no charge for entry. Wirral Transport Museum is a gem of a museum, it is wonderful to see these cars restored back to their original condition and working again, it is a museum that all ages and interests can enjoy.

Constructed soon after the turn of the 20th century, this beautiful building was finally completed in 1978 - a total of 74 challenging years. Curious historians and devout pilgrims can visit the cathedral to behold its graceful elegance and/or participate in services.
The Princes Road Synagogue was founded in 1874 to provide a place of worship to the area's fast growing Jewish community. The landmark sustained significant damage after an arson attack in 1979. Repairs were made and the synagogue was re-consecrated, successfully overcoming the crime. Today visitors can stop by and explore an exhibition of religious artefacts and attend various events hosted throughout the year.
The Wilfred Owen Story is located in a small premises in Argyle Street in Birkenhead. It is the only permanent exhibition remembering the iconic war poet who is considered the greatest war poet ever. Owen spent his impressionable years in Birkenhead and his time here had an influence on him. The volunteer staff are fabulous and very friendly, helpful, passionate and enthusiastic and willingly to answer any questions you might have. There is a number of intimate items that portray his life through a collection of family photographs and reproductions of personal correspondence that reflect on his youth in addition to items of WW1 memorabilia. There are also a other items relating to WW1, work of female war poets and files. There is also a short video and a broadcast script of a BBC interview with Siegfried Sasson an advocate of Owens work, and who was influential in promoting it. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 2.00pm to 5.00pm, appointments outside of these times can be arranged in advance and there is no admission charge. The Wilfred Owen Story is a must for anyone interested in Owen or in literary.

Astley House is a unique and exquisite house located in the stunning surroundings of Astley Park, just a short walk from Chorley town centre. This beautiful Grade I listed house dates to the 1570's and was constructed around an integral courtyard and today serves as a museum and art gallery,with loads of interesting and informative exhibits. The grounds are so well kept and maintained and are home to ancient woodland, providing lots of lovely walks and loads of wide open spaces to run around in, a lake and a completely restored Victorian walled garden where, there is a small orchard and elevated beds that are brimming with vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. The house has numerous fine features and is an architectural delight, it is best known for its beautiful Jacobean plasterwork ceilings, its wood panelling and is home to fine furniture and and furnishings, beautiful paintings and decorative art. The house underwent considerable extension by the families who resided here, during the 1600's and 1820's, the four wings are all extensions however, it still has the majority of its original features. Cafe Ambio is onsite and uses the produce from the garden in the dishes it serves, as well as other local grown produce creating a varied and tasty home cooked menu, the food is delicious, excellently cooked and beautifully presented, their selection of home baked goods are superb, really delicious and everything is great value for money. The house has ongoing renovations so opening times area affected. Cafe Ambio, Coach House and Walled Garden are open daily from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Throughout the year a number of events are organised at the house so worth keeping an eye out for these. Astley House is a charming historic house that has lots to offer and makes for a lovely day out for all, there is something to entertain everyone here, highly recommended.

Fleetwood Museum is housed in the former Custom House, it is a charming Grade II listed building, that overlooks Morecambe Bay. The history of Fleetwood is covered from past to present, there is focus on the towns prominence as a Victorian seaside resort, its cargo trade, ferry services, its lifeboats, docks, local industries, see what people wore and how they lived and much more. There are two galleries that delve into the intriguing story of the towns largely successful achievements at deep sea fishing and inshore fishing which, were main industries in the town and at one time was the biggest port in the country. You can find out all about a fisherman's life and the extreme conditions they would have had to contend with. You can also see how certain fish and shellfish were collected from the shallow waters here in Morecambe Bay. To the rear of the museum is the salvaged and restored "Harriet", one of only a few remaining smacks in the UK, in addition to other large dockland artefacts, photographs and more. There is a bright and contemporary Coffee House that serves a nice selection of light lunches, beverages and delicious cakes. The gift shop has a choice of quality gifts and souvenirs for sale. The museum is open from March through to October, on Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11.00am to 4.00pm, as well as Bank Holiday Mondays. Fleetwood Museum has an excellent collection of exhibits that are well laid out and displayed with lots of information about them, there is something of interest for everyone here, it is a comprehensive and fascinating museum and well worth a visit.
Lancaster Maritime Museum is located in an elegant Georgian building, the former 18th century customs house and warehouse on the banks of the River Lune. The museum is open everyday and there is a small charge although, free to locals. It is an interesting and informative museum that traces the history and industry of Lancaster through trade which, was particularly important to the growth and development of Lancaster, being at one time one of the biggest ports in England. There is an assortment of items that connect the local merchants to their business activities and include a portrait of slave trader Dodshon Forster, and portraits of other prominent people. In addition there is a model of a Waterwitch, it was a luxury horse drawn long barge that brought passengers down the Lancaster Canal from Kendal to Preston, as well as a selection of vessels constructed and used locally including dugout boats and Hector. There is a main detailed exhibit dedicated to fishing which, was a major local industry both in the past and continues to be today. Exhibits are well laid out and have lots of information on them, as well as interactive displays and hands on features, it is probably best to start with the introductory film. The staff are lovely here, very friendly and approachable, they have lots of knowledge and are happy to impart this. There is a small cafe that serves a nice selection of beverages and light refreshments in pleasant and comfortable surroundings. Lancaster Maritime Museum is a great place to learn about the maritime history of the town, it might not appeal to all but, it is nevertheless both interesting and above all informative, definitely worth a visit.
