Situated in the grounds of the owner’s working farm, Old Hollow Cottage is a wing of a larger property and provides cosy and comfortable holiday accommodation in the heart of ‘Natural England’, surrounded by 5000 acres of beach and marsh land. The Ribble Estuary Nature Reserve, which is one of the UK’s most important sites for wintering wildfowl, is literally right on the doorstep with direct access from the property. With RSPB Hesketh Out Marsh within 2 miles and RSPB Marshside and Martin Mere both within 5 miles, this is the perfect base for nature lovers and bird watchers. The network of footpaths and dedicated cycle routes make this a great destination for those who love the outdoors. There are some great walks from the doorstep and you can cycle into Southport which then connects to the Trans Pennine Trail. There are also 10 golf courses within 10 miles. Whilst the cottage has its own patio and seating area, guests also have access to the owner’s fantastic garden. With views towards the Pennines, this beautiful garden has a large pond which is home to a couple of resident swans as well as several pieces of sculpture made from driftwood, one of which has been romantically named ‘The Embrace’ by the owner. The Victorian seaside town of Southport which as well as offering lots of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, also has a fairground, cinema, bowling and indoor water park, providing lots of leisure activities for when the weather is not so great. The train station in Southport provides easy access into Liverpool, approximately 30 minutes, with all its museums, theatres, shopping, Liverpool One, Albert Dock, and other attractions too numerous to mention. Trains also operate to the historic city of Chester, approximately 60 minutes. Other places of interest nearby include National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall, 6 miles, Preston ,15 miles, and the coastal town of Formby, a conservation area whose protected pine woods and sand dunes are home to red squirrels and natterjack toads, 15 miles. If you fancy a longer drive, Ribble Valley and the city of Lancaster can both be reached in an hour. It is one of the foremost premier traditional links courses in the world. It is a particularly difficult course even for those of a high handicap and certainly offers many challenges in the form of rough grass, narrow fairways, pot-bunkers and sand hills. It cannot be classed as an attractive course, as it is enclosed by red brick housing and a railway line but, has its own appeal. The course itself is impeccable and the greens are firm and fast. RSPB Marshside is a lovely coastal reserve and is one of the premier places for wildlife in the UK, it is home to a plethora of marsh and sea birds and other animals who have made this natural habitat their home. Regardless of the season that you visit there is lots to see and always different birds in residence. There are two hides, both are glazed and one is heated, a viewing platform and three viewing screens located here, as well as an information centre. The reserve is open daily from 8.30am to 5.00pm and there is no charge for entry although they do rely on donations to maintain and continue with their work here. The volunteers are really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and will happily discuss the different birds to be found here. In addition there is lots of information on display around the hide. There is a visitor book where you can record what birds you have seen here. They run a number of events throughout the year including an introduction to birdwatching, tide walks and much more. There are footpaths that go along the old sea-wall and coast path, they extend to 1.8m, 2.5m and 4.3m and make for a pleasant walk. The whole are is so peaceful and tranquil and affords great photo opportunities so make sure to take along your camera. RSPB Marshside is a fantastic spot to take a walk, get fresh air, peace and tranquillity and see some amazing wildlife, great for all ages and makes for a brilliant day out in the outdoors.

Williamson Park comprises of 54 acres of stunning parkland and endearing parkland walks within Lancaster. The park has a number of attractions that include the magnificent Ashton Memorial, the Edwardian Butterfly House, ponds, a Pavilion cafe that offers free wifi to its customers and play areas for younger visitors. The park affords stunning views to the Fylde Coast, Morecambe Bay and the Lake District. In addition the park hosts a number of events and activities throughout the year including, concerts, plays courses as well as children's activities. Entry to the park is free but, there is a nominal fee if you want to go into the viewing gallery of the Ashton Memorial, it is a folly with lots of architectural details, and offers great views from its balconies, it has strong historical connections to the War of the Roses. There is a small charge for the Butterfly House, that also houses some mini beasts and a small animal zoo. Williamson Park is well maintained and there is lots of seating to enjoy the lovely flower beds and great views. Throughout the park you will find the staff to be friendly and approachable and they enhance your day here. Hesketh Park is conveniently located just a mile from the town of Southport, it is a beautiful 12 hectare Victorian Park that is open for all to enjoy. This public park is formed by gardens and ornate fountains that have underwent restoration and improvement to return them to their original glory. The park is well maintained and has a number of features including the American Garden, the Clock Garden, the Specimen Garden, the Herbaceous Walk and the Mixed Flower Garden, a conservatory and lake where you can feed the ducks. There are also a number of amenities including public toilets, a mini golf course, cafe, childrens playground and lots of wonderful walking trails. The children will love the freedom to run around and there are lots of opportunities to play a game of hide and seek. The cafe is warm and welcoming and serves a nice selection of beverages and hot and cold snacks, as well as delicious ice-creams. Little Theatre Southport is a cultural centre for the town and hosts a diverse and busy programme of events throughout the year. It is also the home of the Southport Dramatic Club who put on a range of professional performances. The theatre has undergone many changes throughout its history and today is a modern venue with all the state of the art facilities you would expect, in addition it has a nice friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The staff who are mainly volunteers are really friendly and most helpful. It is an intimate and comfortable theatre with a nice bar that has a good selection of beverages and snacks, it is perfect for pre and interval drinks, and they are reasonably priced. The auditorium seats are comfortable with good views of the stage, the lighting and acoustics are very good too. Ticket prices are excellent value for the quality of the productions. It has been a fixture here since 1910 when it started off as a cinema now it serves as a diverse community theatre that is operated by the local amateur dramatics group. Happy Mount Park was first built in 1920 to serve as a traditional urban park area and it continues to serve the residents to this day but with more modern touches whilst still retaining its original charm. The park is open daily from 8.30am and closing times vary depending on the time of year, there is no charge for entry although some of the attractions will incur a cost but they are very reasonable. The park is well maintained by volunteers who do a great job in keeping it clean and tidy. There is so much available here to entertain everyone with a Splash Park, open from May through to early September, Pirates in the Park indoor play area, outdoor natural adventure play area, bowling green, 18-hole putting green, miniature railway, swing boats, trampoline, crazy golf, ornamental gardens, woodland walk, habitat trail, childrens roundabout and floodlit pitches. You could easily spend a full day here enjoying the lovely parkland setting, when the flowers are in bloom it is stunning. Throughout the year the park operates a number of themed events in addition to a selection of the best Brass Bands around playing on a Sunday from the middle of May through to the middle of September. Astley House is a unique and exquisite house located in the stunning surroundings of Astley Park, just a short walk from Chorley town centre. This beautiful Grade I listed house dates to the 1570's and was constructed around an integral courtyard and today serves as a museum and art gallery,with loads of interesting and informative exhibits. The grounds are so well kept and maintained and are home to ancient woodland, providing lots of lovely walks and loads of wide open spaces to run around in, a lake and a completely restored Victorian walled garden where, there is a small orchard and elevated beds that are brimming with vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. The house has numerous fine features and is an architectural delight, it is best known for its beautiful Jacobean plasterwork ceilings, its wood panelling and is home to fine furniture and and furnishings, beautiful paintings and decorative art. The house underwent considerable extension by the families who resided here, during the 1600's and 1820's, the four wings are all extensions however, it still has the majority of its original features. Cafe Ambio is onsite and uses the produce from the garden in the dishes it serves, as well as other local grown produce creating a varied and tasty home cooked menu, the food is delicious, excellently cooked and beautifully presented, their selection of home baked goods are superb, really delicious and everything is great value for money. The house has ongoing renovations so opening times area affected. Cafe Ambio, Coach House and Walled Garden are open daily from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Throughout the year a number of events are organised at the house so worth keeping an eye out for these. Astley House is a charming historic house that has lots to offer and makes for a lovely day out for all, there is something to entertain everyone here, highly recommended.
For more than 25 years, Albert Dock has served as an example of innovative engineering. Today the location serves as a popular local attraction which provides lovely waterfront atmosphere with much to see and do. Many enticing eateries are available as well as cultural and heritage related landmarks, including the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
The Plaza Cinema is an independent venue that is run by volunteers. It was established in 1939 but was immediately closed due to regulations enforced due to the start of the war the very same day. Plans were being made to redevelop the site in 1995, but a local 12 year old school boy started an effort to save the landmark. Today it survives through the hard work and commitment of selfless supporters.
Fleetwood Museum is housed in the former Custom House, it is a charming Grade II listed building, that overlooks Morecambe Bay. The history of Fleetwood is covered from past to present, there is focus on the towns prominence as a Victorian seaside resort, its cargo trade, ferry services, its lifeboats, docks, local industries, see what people wore and how they lived and much more. There are two galleries that delve into the intriguing story of the towns largely successful achievements at deep sea fishing and inshore fishing which, were main industries in the town and at one time was the biggest port in the country. You can find out all about a fisherman's life and the extreme conditions they would have had to contend with. You can also see how certain fish and shellfish were collected from the shallow waters here in Morecambe Bay. To the rear of the museum is the salvaged and restored "Harriet", one of only a few remaining smacks in the UK, in addition to other large dockland artefacts, photographs and more. There is a bright and contemporary Coffee House that serves a nice selection of light lunches, beverages and delicious cakes. The gift shop has a choice of quality gifts and souvenirs for sale. The museum is open from March through to October, on Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11.00am to 4.00pm, as well as Bank Holiday Mondays. There is a small charge for admission for adults and children are free. Fleetwood Museum has an excellent collection of exhibits that are well laid out and displayed with lots of information about them, there is something of interest for everyone here, it is a comprehensive and fascinating museum and well worth a visit.
Lancaster Maritime Museum is located in an elegant Georgian building, the former 18th century customs house and warehouse on the banks of the River Lune. The museum is open everyday and there is a small charge although, free to locals. It is an interesting and informative museum that traces the history and industry of Lancaster through trade which, was particularly important to the growth and development of Lancaster, being at one time one of the biggest ports in England. There is an assortment of items that connect the local merchants to their business activities and include a portrait of slave trader Dodshon Forster, and portraits of other prominent people. In addition there is a model of a Waterwitch, it was a luxury horse drawn long barge that brought passengers down the Lancaster Canal from Kendal to Preston, as well as a selection of vessels constructed and used locally including dugout boats and Hector. There is a main detailed exhibit dedicated to fishing which, was a major local industry both in the past and continues to be today. Exhibits are well laid out and have lots of information on them, as well as interactive displays and hands on features, it is probably best to start with the introductory film. The staff are lovely here, very friendly and approachable, they have lots of knowledge and are happy to impart this. There is a small cafe that serves a nice selection of beverages and light refreshments in pleasant and comfortable surroundings. Lancaster Maritime Museum is a great place to learn about the maritime history of the town, it might not appeal to all but, it is nevertheless both interesting and above all informative, definitely worth a visit.

The Birkenhead Heritage Tramway plays a pivotal role in the preservation of the trams without the society these beautiful vehicles would no longer be. Their dedication and hard work has resulted in more than half a dozen tram cars being rescued and lovingly restored to their original condition. Today their collection demonstrates the growth of Britains first tramways that were operated by horse, to steam tram and right through to a fully enclosed electric bogie car. Also found here are a single deck continental tram as well as an overhead maintenance wagon dating to the 1940's, in addition to a great collection of all things transport related including bikes, a model railway, transport signs, plaques and even an old bus stop . These historic and impressive vehicles ride along the mile long Wirral Heritage Tramway, the driver and conductor are dressed in period costume, it is a unique experience and you can enjoy the lovely views of Liverpools waterfront as you trundle and judder along. There is a small charge to ride the trams, the museum is free to enter. They organise special events and themed events throughout the year, it is worth keeping an eye out for these they are fun and entertaining for all the family. People of all ages and interests will enjoy a visit to The Birkenhead Tramways, it is fantastic to see these vehicles working and to learn all about their history. The volunteers here are wonderful really friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will happily show you around and entertain you with their stories. Wirral Transport Museum is located in Taylor Street in Birkenhead and was established to preserve the historic influence of trams here in the town. Birkenhead was the first place in England to endorse a street tramway back in 1901 and these were a familiar sight until 1937 when they ceased to operate. This intimate museum is home to a wonderful collection of vintage transport vehicles, including a selection of tram cars, local buses, cars, motorbikes, a model railway and lots of transport memorabilia and artefacts such as transport signs, a bus stop, maps, books, photos and much more. There is lots of information available on the exhibits. Volunteers are responsible for the restoration of the vehicles and the running of the museum and they do a fabulous job, they are really hard working, and you will find them to be friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and passionate, they are more then happy to answer any questions you might have. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, in addition it opens on bank holidays and during the school holidays, there is no charge for entry. Wirral Transport Museum is a gem of a museum, it is wonderful to see these cars restored back to their original condition and working again, it is a museum that all ages and interests can enjoy.
The Wilfred Owen Story is located in a small premises in Argyle Street in Birkenhead. It is the only permanent exhibition remembering the iconic war poet who is considered the greatest war poet ever. Owen spent his impressionable years in Birkenhead and his time here had an influence on him. The volunteer staff are fabulous and very friendly, helpful, passionate and enthusiastic and willingly to answer any questions you might have. There is a number of intimate items that portray his life through a collection of family photographs and reproductions of personal correspondence that reflect on his youth in addition to items of WW1 memorabilia. There are also a other items relating to WW1, work of female war poets and files. There is also a short video and a broadcast script of a BBC interview with Siegfried Sasson an advocate of Owens work, and who was influential in promoting it. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 2.00pm to 5.00pm, appointments outside of these times can be arranged in advance and there is no admission charge. The Wilfred Owen Story is a must for anyone interested in Owen or in literary.

There are guided tours available that are taken by friendly and knowledgeable guides and are a great way to get the most out of your visit here. Lancaster City Museum narrates history in an informative and fascinating way, making it a perfect place for the whole family everyone will find something of interest here.
Cottage Museum is located across from Lancaster Castle, it is part of a 1739 house that was partitioned around 1820 and is representative of an artisan's house of that date. This quaint museum gives a personal look at early Victorian life in a small and interesting 18th century cottage laid out over five floors, you will find a small cellar, laundry room, living room, bedroom and an attic. Opening hours are daily from Easter to September from 2pm to 5pm, and there is a nominal charge of £1 and it is so worth the money. Once you step through the tiny door you are immediately taken back to a former era, where there was no running water, central heating, electricity or even a toilet. As you wander through the small rooms you will be able to see first hand how the people lived and get a look at many original features and some of the gadgets and utensils that were used in people's daily lives, the difficulties and struggles they would have encountered, if this was someone who was well off it makes you consider what conditions the poor lived in. Just remember to watch your head as you wander around! The staff are lovely, so friendly and helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have, them dressed in period clothes is a nice touch and the stories are very interesting and entertaining. Cottage Museum will entertain people of all ages, you will be enthralled by the simplicity of life and entertained by the stories told, a delightful and insightful museum.

The Weavers Triangle Visitor Centre is located in the original Wharfmasters home on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a very scenic area. This area was at one time prominent in Burnleys textile industry and the centre narrates the story of the canal, cotton, and the Weavers' Triangle. A visit to this small living museum will transport you back in time to this bygone era, you can visit the recreated Victorian schoolroom, where young children can dress in period clothes, and get to experience what it would have been like in the classroom. The Edwardian bathroom and weavers dwelling gives a glimpse into how the workers would have lived. You get a real insight into the cotton industry and learn how cotton is made in the weaving shed, there is also the opportunity to have a go at weaving. For younger visitors there is a range of activities including a children's corner, trails and quizzes as well as a fabulous working model fairground designed on the old Burnley Fair. The display rooms delves into many aspects of the towns industrial and social history through frequently changing exhibits, items on display include artwork, crafts and local history. The Victorian Parlour serves a nice selection of light refreshments, that are well priced. There is a also a gift shop. They are open from April until the end of September on a Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and in October on Saturdays and Sundays only, opening hours are 2.00pm to 4.00pm and there is no charge for entry although they do accept donations to keep the centre running. The staff are great really friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable, on the history of Burnley. The Weavers Triangle Visitor Centre is a real gem it does a great job in telling the importance of the cotton trade on the area and the tough lives the workers lived, there is something to appeal to everyone, highly recommended.
Towneley Hall is a historic and charming stately Grade I listed house that is located in a park. The hall was home to the Towneley family for almost five centuries and they left it to Burnley council for the people to enjoy. The house is beautifully preserved and has a long history and wonderful architecture as well as a number of intriguing features with hidden priest's hole and hidden passages, period rooms with original decor that span several centuries, dungeons and battlements and period kitchen in addition there are a number of intriguing exhibits on display, lots of work of art and antique furniture. You are transported back in time and get a real glimpse into how the family would have lived in luxury back in the day. Today the house, its residents and its many stories are brought back to life by a company of re-enactors who narrate the dramas, triumphs, tragedies and characters of this intriguing home. Tours are very interesting and informative and well presented with lots of details on the family and the house. The gardens are well maintained and comprise of landscaped lawns, flower beds, woodland that offers loads of lovely walks, and excellent wooden sculptures dotted about, there is a large play area that has lots of equipment as well as a working water pump and there are ducks to feed. The Stables Cafe in lovely and has nice cosy and welcoming atmosphere, they sell a good selection of beverages and delicious hot and cold food, that is well priced. There is also a nice gift shop. The hall is open Monday to Thursday and Saturday and Sunday from 12.00pm to 5.00pm. There is no entry for children, students or Burnley residents other visitors incur a small charge of £4 per person, but your ticket allows entry for a year. The staff here are very pleasant, friendly and helpful as well as knowledgeable about the house and its history. Towneley Hall is a beautiful and amazing period home that allows a glimpse into a bygone era, there is lots on offer here to appeal to everyone, from the history of the house to walks in the woodland trails and much more, highly recommended.
