It has a long and celebrated history and has been the host to a number of prestigious competitions and events. It is a stunning course and every hole is a different with amazing scenery and views. The course is well designed and is an 18 hole, par 72 course. Royal Birkdale offers a real test of golf to all standard of player, a particular difficulty here is the winds that come off the Irish Sea they can be gusty, in addition to the narrow fairways, deep bunkers and punishing rough you have your work cut out. The course is fantastic and excellently maintained throughout the year, the greens are first rate as are the fairways. The club is very welcoming to visitors and the staff are very friendly and professional throughout. The clubhouse is fantastic and well recognised with its amazing Art Deco design, great facilities, stunning views over the course, very comfortable and welcoming, there is a great menu and the food is superb, freshly cooked and really delicious, it is slightly more expensive than you normally pay but excellent value for the quality and service you receive. Royal Birkdale Golf Club offers an unparalleled experience that is hard to beat, it is evident once you play why it is so highly regarded, a little expensive but worth every penny.
Founded in 1933 this is a glorious 18 hole members only golf club. There has been little change to this course over the years and with competitions held every Saturday and most Tuesdays this is must for the avid golfer.
Originally a 9 hole course dating back to 1885 this club is packed with history. The fairways were used in the Second World War for vegetables and the course was re-established in 1946 and made into an 18 hole course in the 70's. Fabulous course which will challenge every golfer.

RSPB Marshside is a lovely coastal reserve and is one of the premier places for wildlife in the UK, it is home to a plethora of marsh and sea birds and other animals who have made this natural habitat their home. Regardless of the season that you visit there is lots to see and always different birds in residence. There are two hides, both are glazed and one is heated, a viewing platform and three viewing screens located here, as well as an information centre. The reserve is open daily from 8.30am to 5.00pm and there is no charge for entry although they do rely on donations to maintain and continue with their work here. The volunteers are really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and will happily discuss the different birds to be found here. In addition there is lots of information on display around the hide. There is a visitor book where you can record what birds you have seen here. They run a number of events throughout the year including an introduction to birdwatching, tide walks and much more. There are footpaths that go along the old sea-wall and coast path, they extend to 1.8m, 2.5m and 4.3m and make for a pleasant walk. The whole are is so peaceful and tranquil and affords great photo opportunities so make sure to take along your camera. RSPB Marshside is a fantastic spot to take a walk, get fresh air, peace and tranquillity and see some amazing wildlife, great for all ages and makes for a brilliant day out in the outdoors.

Williamson Park comprises of 54 acres of stunning parkland and endearing parkland walks within Lancaster. There is a small charge for the Butterfly House, that also houses some mini beasts and a small animal zoo. Williamson Park is well maintained and there is lots of seating to enjoy the lovely flower beds and great views. Throughout the park you will find the staff to be friendly and approachable and they enhance your day here. Williamson Park offers something for the whole family and offers an amazing space to enjoy some lovely scenery, in a peaceful environment. It is worth checking to see what events are taking place here the summer outdoor theatre is brilliant and should not be missed if you get the opportunity.
Gresgarth Hall is the concept and product of the talented garden designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd who took up residence here in 1978. These are her own private gardens that are open to the public once a month, you will need to check for opening times. They are picturesque riverside gardens, with terraces, herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden, woodland garden and bog garden that surround a beautiful house. There is a huge number of different species of plants and trees here and they are all labelled. Regardless of the time you visit you are awarded with a stunning arrangement of plants and a riot of colours and aromas. They provide an oasis of calm, peace and tranquillity and the surroundings are beautiful. There are refreshments available here, they are all homemade and delicious and are great value for money. Gresgarth Hall is a delight for both avid gardeners and non gardeners you can't help but be impressed with these amazing surroundings, the perfect place to pass a few pleasant hours.

There is a diverse programme of events so there will be something to appeal to everyone. The staff are volunteers and you will find them to be friendly and helpful. There is a nice bar where you enjoy pre-show drinks, as well as a cafe where a nice selection of light snacks and home cooked traditional meals as well as hot and cold beverages. The seating is roomy and comfortable and the acoustics were very good, there is no problem seeing the stage regardless of where you sit. Lowther Pavilion offers fantastic quality shows in a warm and welcoming environment at very reasonable prices.

Chorley Little Theatre is a bustling and vibrant arts centre in the heart of the town in Chorley, it is located in a quirky building. It has been a fixture here since 1910 when it started off as a cinema now it serves as a diverse community theatre that is operated by the local amateur dramatics group. They showcase a minimum of six high quality productions a season that includes everything from drama to pantomimes and comedy to dance. In addition it serves as a community cinema and offers a cinema experience where they show a selection of the latest movies and blockbusters. It is an small theatre with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with great facilities, the lighting and sound are very good, the seating is comfortable and offers unrestricted views of the stage. They use the most modern equipment as well as having the latest off-road version of the segway, this 2x2 model allows you to go on more challenging areas. It is advisable to book in advance and this can be done online. They supply all equipment and you are given a safety brief and a training demonstration before you get access to a machine. It takes a few minutes to get used to the machine and get your balance, once this is achieved you are on your way you simply lean in the direction that you want to go and you are off. The pace at the beginning is kept to a moderate speed and then increases as everyone gets more comfortable and confident. The tour generally takes about forty five to fifty minutes but the overall experience lasts about one hour thirty minutes. It is a novel and fun way to experience the countryside. The staff are great, very friendly, patient and encouraging in getting you going. There are lots of opportunities to get photos and videos of your experience. It is a brilliant experience that is excellent value for money too. Will make a great family or group activity that almost everyone can get involved with, riders have to be over ten years of age and meet certain weight conditions. Particular points of interest along this trail include the Argyle Rooms that served as an important meeting place for England's antislavery campaign, the townhouse and statue of John Laird, whose company constructed the Alabama. Eastham Ferry still has the 1857 ferry ticket office and a portion of the 1874 pier that can still be seen today. Eastham Country Park is home to a large selection of wildlife and lots of mature trees and provides lots of pleasant walks in a peaceful setting. In New Brighton you will find the Perch Rock Lighthouse as well as Fort Perch Rock, an imposing sandstone fort constructed in 1826, it is now houses a small museum. Happy Mount Park was first built in 1920 to serve as a traditional urban park area and it continues to serve the residents to this day but with more modern touches whilst still retaining its original charm. The park is open daily from 8.30am and closing times vary depending on the time of year, there is no charge for entry although some of the attractions will incur a cost but they are very reasonable. The park is well maintained by volunteers who do a great job in keeping it clean and tidy. There is so much available here to entertain everyone with a Splash Park, open from May through to early September, Pirates in the Park indoor play area, outdoor natural adventure play area, bowling green, 18-hole putting green, miniature railway, swing boats, trampoline, crazy golf, ornamental gardens, woodland walk, habitat trail, childrens roundabout and floodlit pitches. You could easily spend a full day here enjoying the lovely parkland setting, when the flowers are in bloom it is stunning. Throughout the year the park operates a number of themed events in addition to a selection of the best Brass Bands around playing on a Sunday from the middle of May through to the middle of September. You can bring a picnic or visit the cafe where they serve a good selection of beverages, light snacks and refreshments. Happy Mount Park offers something for everyone and is free too, not many places offer that today.

You can also see how certain fish and shellfish were collected from the shallow waters here in Morecambe Bay. To the rear of the museum is the salvaged and restored "Harriet", one of only a few remaining smacks in the UK, in addition to other large dockland artefacts, photographs and more. There is a bright and contemporary Coffee House that serves a nice selection of light lunches, beverages and delicious cakes. The gift shop has a choice of quality gifts and souvenirs for sale. The museum is open from March through to October, on Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11.00am to 4.00pm, as well as Bank Holiday Mondays. Lancaster Maritime Museum is located in an elegant Georgian building, the former 18th century customs house and warehouse on the banks of the River Lune. The museum is open everyday and there is a small charge although, free to locals. It is an interesting and informative museum that traces the history and industry of Lancaster through trade which, was particularly important to the growth and development of Lancaster, being at one time one of the biggest ports in England. There is an assortment of items that connect the local merchants to their business activities and include a portrait of slave trader Dodshon Forster, and portraits of other prominent people. In addition there is a model of a Waterwitch, it was a luxury horse drawn long barge that brought passengers down the Lancaster Canal from Kendal to Preston, as well as a selection of vessels constructed and used locally including dugout boats and Hector. There is a main detailed exhibit dedicated to fishing which, was a major local industry both in the past and continues to be today. The staff are lovely here, very friendly and approachable, they have lots of knowledge and are happy to impart this. There is a small cafe that serves a nice selection of beverages and light refreshments in pleasant and comfortable surroundings. Lancaster Maritime Museum is a great place to learn about the maritime history of the town, it might not appeal to all but, it is nevertheless both interesting and above all informative, definitely worth a visit.

Today the location serves as a popular local attraction which provides lovely waterfront atmosphere with much to see and do. Many enticing eateries are available as well as cultural and heritage related landmarks, including the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
Astley House is a unique and exquisite house located in the stunning surroundings of Astley Park, just a short walk from Chorley town centre. This beautiful Grade I listed house dates to the 1570's and was constructed around an integral courtyard and today serves as a museum and art gallery,with loads of interesting and informative exhibits. The grounds are so well kept and maintained and are home to ancient woodland, providing lots of lovely walks and loads of wide open spaces to run around in, a lake and a completely restored Victorian walled garden where, there is a small orchard and elevated beds that are brimming with vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. The house has numerous fine features and is an architectural delight, it is best known for its beautiful Jacobean plasterwork ceilings, its wood panelling and is home to fine furniture and and furnishings, beautiful paintings and decorative art. The house underwent considerable extension by the families who resided here, during the 1600's and 1820's, the four wings are all extensions however, it still has the majority of its original features. Cafe Ambio is onsite and uses the produce from the garden in the dishes it serves, as well as other local grown produce creating a varied and tasty home cooked menu, the food is delicious, excellently cooked and beautifully presented, their selection of home baked goods are superb, really delicious and everything is great value for money. The house has ongoing renovations so opening times area affected. Cafe Ambio, Coach House and Walled Garden are open daily from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Throughout the year a number of events are organised at the house so worth keeping an eye out for these. Astley House is a charming historic house that has lots to offer and makes for a lovely day out for all, there is something to entertain everyone here, highly recommended.
The Plaza Cinema is an independent venue that is run by volunteers. It was established in 1939 but was immediately closed due to regulations enforced due to the start of the war the very same day. Plans were being made to redevelop the site in 1995, but a local 12 year old school boy started an effort to save the landmark. Today it survives through the hard work and commitment of selfless supporters.

Lancaster City Museum can be found in a grand Georgian building in the centre of the city. The museum is open Monday to Saturday and there is no entrance charge. It is a quirky but interesting museum with many features and uses imaginative presentation. The history of the city from past to present day is illustrated here and there is an extensive range of exhibits on show, they include an area dedicated to determining the ancestry of Lancaster's regiment from 1680 onwards, with medals, weapons, uniforms etc., there is also an excellent compilation of portraits and landscapes on display, artefacts, relics, medieval stone crosses and much more. In addition to the many permanent exhibits there are exhibits that frequently change together, with a range of events and activities for everyone. The exhibits are all clearly marked and well explained with information cards. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and are available if you need any information or questions answered. There are guided tours available that are taken by friendly and knowledgeable guides and are a great way to get the most out of your visit here. Lancaster City Museum narrates history in an informative and fascinating way, making it a perfect place for the whole family everyone will find something of interest here.
As well as being a fortification, Lancaster Castle is also one of Europe's longest serving prisons. The Famous Pendle Witches were tried, convicted and sentenced to death here.
Cottage Museum is located across from Lancaster Castle, it is part of a 1739 house that was partitioned around 1820 and is representative of an artisan's house of that date. This quaint museum gives a personal look at early Victorian life in a small and interesting 18th century cottage laid out over five floors, you will find a small cellar, laundry room, living room, bedroom and an attic. Opening hours are daily from Easter to September from 2pm to 5pm, and there is a nominal charge of £1 and it is so worth the money. Once you step through the tiny door you are immediately taken back to a former era, where there was no running water, central heating, electricity or even a toilet. As you wander through the small rooms you will be able to see first hand how the people lived and get a look at many original features and some of the gadgets and utensils that were used in people's daily lives, the difficulties and struggles they would have encountered, if this was someone who was well off it makes you consider what conditions the poor lived in. Just remember to watch your head as you wander around! The staff are lovely, so friendly and helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have, them dressed in period clothes is a nice touch and the stories are very interesting and entertaining. Cottage Museum will entertain people of all ages, you will be enthralled by the simplicity of life and entertained by the stories told, a delightful and insightful museum.

The Birkenhead Heritage Tramway plays a pivotal role in the preservation of the trams without the society these beautiful vehicles would no longer be. Today their collection demonstrates the growth of Britains first tramways that were operated by horse, to steam tram and right through to a fully enclosed electric bogie car. Also found here are a single deck continental tram as well as an overhead maintenance wagon dating to the 1940's, in addition to a great collection of all things transport related including bikes, a model railway, transport signs, plaques and even an old bus stop . These historic and impressive vehicles ride along the mile long Wirral Heritage Tramway, the driver and conductor are dressed in period costume, it is a unique experience and you can enjoy the lovely views of Liverpools waterfront as you trundle and judder along. There is a small charge to ride the trams, the museum is free to enter. They organise special events and themed events throughout the year, it is worth keeping an eye out for these they are fun and entertaining for all the family. People of all ages and interests will enjoy a visit to The Birkenhead Tramways, it is fantastic to see these vehicles working and to learn all about their history. The volunteers here are wonderful really friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will happily show you around and entertain you with their stories. Take the time to visit The Birkenhead Heritage Tramway you won't be disappointed and young children will love the tram ride.
Wirral Transport Museum is located in Taylor Street in Birkenhead and was established to preserve the historic influence of trams here in the town. Birkenhead was the first place in England to endorse a street tramway back in 1901 and these were a familiar sight until 1937 when they ceased to operate. This intimate museum is home to a wonderful collection of vintage transport vehicles, including a selection of tram cars, local buses, cars, motorbikes, a model railway and lots of transport memorabilia and artefacts such as transport signs, a bus stop, maps, books, photos and much more. There is lots of information available on the exhibits. Volunteers are responsible for the restoration of the vehicles and the running of the museum and they do a fabulous job, they are really hard working, and you will find them to be friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and passionate, they are more then happy to answer any questions you might have. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, in addition it opens on bank holidays and during the school holidays, there is no charge for entry. Wirral Transport Museum is a gem of a museum, it is wonderful to see these cars restored back to their original condition and working again, it is a museum that all ages and interests can enjoy.
The Princes Road Synagogue was founded in 1874 to provide a place of worship to the area's fast growing Jewish community. The landmark sustained significant damage after an arson attack in 1979. Repairs were made and the synagogue was re-consecrated, successfully overcoming the crime. Today visitors can stop by and explore an exhibition of religious artefacts and attend various events hosted throughout the year.
The Wilfred Owen Story is located in a small premises in Argyle Street in Birkenhead. It is the only permanent exhibition remembering the iconic war poet who is considered the greatest war poet ever. Owen spent his impressionable years in Birkenhead and his time here had an influence on him. The volunteer staff are fabulous and very friendly, helpful, passionate and enthusiastic and willingly to answer any questions you might have. There is a number of intimate items that portray his life through a collection of family photographs and reproductions of personal correspondence that reflect on his youth in addition to items of WW1 memorabilia. There are also a other items relating to WW1, work of female war poets and files. There is also a short video and a broadcast script of a BBC interview with Siegfried Sasson an advocate of Owens work, and who was influential in promoting it. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 2.00pm to 5.00pm, appointments outside of these times can be arranged in advance and there is no admission charge. The Wilfred Owen Story is a must for anyone interested in Owen or in literary.
