This period, detached holiday cottage is what used to be the old toll house for paying the taxes to Carisbrooke Castle, hence the unusual hexagonal shape of the main part of the property. Built in 1810, the cottage is a Grade II listed building and has been delightfully renovated to retain its many original features. The property has been equipped and furnished to a very good standard, and also has its own enclosed garden. Toll houses played a vital role in the building of Britain and were symbols of a new and efficient road system linking every community in the land. In the early 17th century, travelling the roads of Britain was an extremely hazardous undertaking with no responsibility for the upkeep of roads, and robberies were also rife. In 1663 the Turnpike Act was passed. Many toll houses were built by turnpike trusts in England, Wales and Scotland during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Toll Cottage is a prime example of an early 19th century toll house. The houses often had a distinctive bay front to give the pikeman a clear view of the road and to provide a display area for the toll board. In 1840, there were over 5000 toll houses operating in England and these were sold off in the 1880s when the turnpikes were closed. Records at the Isle of Wight Land Registry indicate that Toll Cottage was moved from its original site at the beginning of the road, which was a typical pinch point, to its current position halfway along.
The nearby town centre bustles with shops, restaurants and pubs. There are local markets on Tuesdays and Fridays, an arts complex at the old quay and a multiplex cinema. Newport is an ideal base for touring the island by car or bus. Carisbrooke Castle can be found nearby. All the island’s attractions are within easy reach, including Osborne House, Calbourne Water Mill, Ventnor Botanic Gardens, The Needles, NT properties, harbours at Cowes and Yarmouth, seaside resorts, zoos and amusement parks. There are many beautiful walks to discover along the heritage coastline, and plenty of sandy or shingle beaches, coves and bays. Outdoor pursuits include excellent scenic walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and golf. Beach 10 miles. Shop 50 yards, pub and restaurant 1/2 mile.

Living room with period feature fireplace with ammonites and wooden floor. Large dining room with feature fireplace and wooden floor. Farmhouse-style kitchen with tiled floor. Steep stairs to first floor: Double bedroom. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with separate shower cubicle and toilet.
