The village of Altarnun nestles in the valley of Penpont Water, a tributary of the River Inny and is noted as one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Many of the cottages in the village are Grade II listed and are of significant importance. The church in the centre of the village was built in the 15th century and is the ‘Cathedral of the Moor’, and the rectory later built in the 1800s was featured in Daphne du Maurier’s famous book, Jamaica Inn. Altarnun is truly a hidden gem of a village with its pretty cottages, idyllic babbling stream and Georgian-style lampposts, yet is close enough to the A30, making exploring the wider region very easily accessible. The village is a former winner of ’Best Kept Village’ and has also appeared in the wedding episode of ’Doc Martin.’ The Old Post Office is a terraced holiday home and sits in the heart of the village; a listed period property, it still retains many of its original features including the smooth worn flagstone flooring. A perfect central spot for those wanting a good base to explore the whole county of Cornwall. Guests can access a wi-fi hot spot from the local pub. Shop 200 yards, pub and restaurant 1/2 mile.
