The Paper Mill is located next to the waterside, on an important historic site in Hemel Hempstead and enjoys lovely views across the waterways. It is a warm and welcoming pub with a friendly atmosphere, the decor is bright and modern and is enhanced by the open fires and comfy sofas. There is a balcony and a large patio terrace where you can sit and enjoy the views of the Grand Union Canal. The menu serves a selection of classic British food that is prepared using fresh, seasonal local ingredients that are well cooked and presented and represents great value for money. They are well organised and the activity is well run. Safety is paramount and you are given a full safety briefing and the equipment is explained before you start. Staff are always close by if you encounter any problems, you will find them to be friendly, helpful and professional. They are also encouraging if heights aren't your forte. Prices are very reasonable and offer great value for money. They are open Tuesday to Sunday, and booking in advance is recommended, each session will last about an hour. Make sure to wear suitable footwear and clothing that you can easily move in. There is the Bunker or Canteen where you can get beverages and hot and cold snacks at reasonable prices. Rope Runners offers a fun and challenging activity that all the family can get involved in, the minimum age is six, you will be very popular if you take the children here on a day out.

Barnards Farm Miniature Railway is run by a team of volunteers, it opened back in September 2010 and has been a continual source of fun and enjoyment for families. The track is a 7 1/4 inch gauge that takes steam, diesel/hydraulic, petrol and electric locomotives, it runs from the car park to Belevedere Station and back which covers 1.4km, you can see the sculptures in the garden as you travel along. The train operates from April through to December on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays as well as Saturdays in the summer months, it also opens for special open days at other times. A great place to visit especially if you have children that love Thomas the Tank Engine. Afterwards you can visit the gardens and enjoy some refreshments here in the welcoming and homely barn. The cost for the railway is very reasonable and once paid you have access to the trains all day. They do Santa Specials at Christmas time. The staff are lovely, really friendly and helpful. They are looking to extend the track so it will offer an even better experience. Barnards Farm Miniature Railway is a lovely day out for all the family, relaxing and fun, a real treat.

The course is well maintained, the greens are fast and smooth. The most memorable hole on the course is the sixteenth. The club is very welcoming to non members and the staff throughout are very friendly, helpful and professional. The facilities here are very good and the clubhouse is comfortable and welcoming and they have a good menu, the food is very good, well cooked and presented and represents real value for money. There is also a putting green and practice green here. Bentley Golf Club is a great club to play, friendly staff, beautiful course and really reasonable green fees, it ticks all the boxes, highly recommended.

Cheslyn House and Gardens is a hidden gem here in Watford, they are a little known secret. They have undergone considerable work in recent years to bring them to this exceptional standard. There is no charge to the gardens and they are open throughout the year except for the usual holidays over Christmas. The gardens consist of a formal garden and a semi natural woodland area and extend to more than 3.5 acres. The house was previously owned by Henry and Daisy Colbeck who were responsible for planting and designing the gardens, many of the unique and exotic plants being brought back from their overseas travels. In recent years there has been a number of additions to the gardens including the pond, rock garden, large herbaceous borders and the aviary. You will find a gardener within the grounds who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will happily discuss the plants and wildlife found here, attracted by the lowers and trees providing the ideal habitats for them. They also offer guided walks that are interesting and informative. There is free food to feed the cattle and you are shown around on an ox driven cart to see how they practice sustainable farming. The produce that they grow here can be purchased, it was lovely to go home with fresh vegetables, in addition there is a gift shop and bakery, serving a nice selection of goods. They also offer free food to all guests to the manor what an unusual and pleasing thing to do. if you can visit when there is a spiritual event on you will find it to be an extraordinary experience, one you can't describe. You can get what you want from a visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor be it the history of Hare Krishna, tour of the manor, food, prayers, spiritual knowledge or simply a chat with one of the devotees, you get their full attention and the reception you receive is wonderful. Thorndon Country Park is divided into Thorndon Park North, that is home to the Countryside Centre and Thorndon Park South. The park covers hundreds of acres and was an ancient deer park that dates back to the 15th century. Within the park you will find a great variety of trees, grassland and three small lakes as well as a diverse range of habitats for the local wildlife. The Countryside Centre was constructed from timber salvaged from the 1987 storms, it is home to a permanent exhibition, a shop that sells gifts and refreshments. The park has lots to explore with its varying landscapes, and provides a number of lovely walks and cycle paths, you can take your own bike or hire one here, it is well laid out and sign posted. You can also horse ride here as long as you adhere to the areas marked with a blue arrow. Fishing is available, you are required to purchase a day ticket, you will find carp and bream here. The onsite shop sells a selection of the paper it produces both machine and handmade, in addition there is a gallery that is free to look around and exhibits individual artists at different times, the artwork on display is for sale. Afterwards you can for an extra cost take a boat trip around the mill. It can be cold in the mill so ensure you take along something warm to wear. Frogmore Paper Mill is an intriguing and mesmerising look into the history and production of paper, there is so much to gather from a visit and it is an outing that everyone will enjoy, highly recommended.

There is no entry charge but donations are welcome. This intimate museum is operated by former fire service officers so they have all the answers to your questions, you will find them to be jovial and helpful, and they have many stories to tell of their time in the fire service. Some of the machines on display are two 19th century hand manual fire appliances, a 1896 Shand-Mason horse drawn steam powered fire engine, a 1937 Leyland fire appliance as well as a 1972 Dennis trailer pump that was in service during the Second World War, this is not an exhaustive list there is much more to see here. There are interactive exhibits where you can try on the uniforms and equipment that can be operated. There is an enormous photographic display, documents and resource library. During your visit you will also become more aware of safety issues which, can only be a good thing.You will find the museum open on one Saturday per month, from 1pm to 4pm, and only from April to September, check the Website for the actual dates.
