Hythe is one of the original Cinque Ports, Henry VIII built dimunitive Sandgate Castle and a chain of Martello towers were erected during the Napoleonic wars, along with the Royal Military Canal which stretches for 28 miles and is a great spot for hiring a rowing boat or cycling on the towpath. Every two years Hythe hosts a spectacular Venetian Fete. The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Steam Railway offers a scenic marshside chug through to Dungeness where you can see Derek Jarman, the filmmaker’s cottage and experience for yourself the isolation and beauty of the shingle. Also visit the RSPB observatory, ideal for spotting migratory birds. Back in Hythe, take a stroll up to 11th-century St Leonard’s Church with its skull-packed ossuary! Go on a safari at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park and spot the lions, tigers, gorillas and meerkats. Dover and day trips to France, 12 miles, Channel Tunnel, 4 miles, Ashford International passenger terminal, 10 miles, Canterbury, 15 miles, and McArthur Glen designer shopping outlet, 10 miles. Beach 500 yards. Shop 200 yards, pub and restaurant 150 yards.
