Priory Cottage is a period, thatched, stone cottage with an abundance of character and detail, dating from the 19th century and appearing on maps and censuses of the 1830s. Originally owned by Lord Tennyson and featuring in the Tennyson Trail, the cottage adjoins another property and features beautiful decorative tiles above its windows and doors that were made by Lord Tennyson himself when he chose the property to house his beloved nanny. Priory Cottage has other famous connections as Tennyson’s good friend G.F.Watts lived next door, and Montgomery’s map-maker is also known to have lived in the cottage. The property is set in an area with a strong smuggling history, and at the back of the cottage there are drawings of ships scratched into some of the stones – traditionally the sign of a smugglers’ safe house. Being set within an AONB, most of the surrounding land is National Trust and includes the West High Down, The Tennyson Trail and the stunning Heritage coastline. Tennyson monument and Headon Warren with its breathtaking views of The Needles are nearby. Although in a secluded area, amenities in Totland and Freshwater are only a 5-minute drive, offering shops, library, tearooms, indoor swimming pool and pubs, and Alum Bay with its famous coloured sands, is about 30 minutes’ walk over the Downs. The historic sailing town of Yarmouth, set in the estuary of the River Yar, is about 10 minutes’ drive, and Colwell, Totland and the popular sandy beach at Compton are 5 minutes’ drive away. As well as the excellent walks from the house locally, there are also many tourist attractions to discover, including The Needles Park - one of the most popular attractions on the island, with chairlift, boat rides, coloured sands, lighthouse, amusements and glass making. Also within easy driving distance are Blackgang Chine, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, traditional pottery making, Calbourne water mill, various NT homes/gardens, vineyards, museums, wildlife centres, a zoo, pearl centre, Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, Cowes/Yarmouth harbours. Outdoor pursuits include golf (nearby Freshwater), cycling, riding, sailing, fishing and diving. Beach 1 mile. Shop 1 mile, pub 500 yards.
