Beautifully positioned in the Eden Valley, on the fringe of the Lake District on Cumbria’s eastern side, this delightful, detached, early 18th-century farmhouse has been beautifully renovated to create a holiday home of a very good standard in an idyllic rural setting. Much of the original character has been retained with beams, flagged floors, fire surrounds and some low doors, and the old cottage charm is complemented by modern fittings, quality furnishings and a large, extra sitting room with a high, beamed vaulted ceiling in what was formerly an adjoining barn.
The small village of Great Asby, ½ mile, has a pub serving real ale and meals in front of a log fire. The village is situated on the Westmoreland Way so there are interesting and varied walks from the doorstep, including the limestone pavements, Pate Hole Caves and Rutter Falls. Appleby, 5 miles, is a picturesque market town lying in a loop of the River Eden. There is excellent fishing, golf, a leisure centre and a good selection of shops and restaurants.
The farmland and area surrounding the house is a haven for peace and tranquillity with a vast variety of wildlife, perfect for ornithologists and country lovers. The area is outstanding for walking, whether for a hike on the high open fells or a gentle riverside stroll. Cyclists will love the quiet country lanes and the nearby ‘C2C’ cycle route. The pretty country villages with their farmers’ markets and local shows are a delight to explore.
Centrally located between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks and close to the North Pennines, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Border, this makes this a very well-situated retreat from which to explore the beauty spots of Northern England. Shop 4 miles, pub ½ mile.
