Appleby Castle is situated deep in the heart of the beautiful Eden Valley, just 15 miles from the Lake District, nestling alongside the meandering River Eden. This spectacular motte and bailey castle has been held by the Kings of England and Scotland and boasts one of the few remaining intact Norman keeps in Great Britain. In the 17th Century, the castle was the preferred residence of Lady Anne Clifford. She was a patron of authors and literature and known for her many letters and diaries.

Cottage Three is one of three holiday properties which make up part of the inner bailey wall and medieval defences, which stand adjacent to the Norman Keep which has hardly changed over the past 900 years. The old great hall, built in 1454, stands across the courtyard and guests are invited to take a free tour with afternoon tea during their stay.

Appleby Castle owns the fishing rights on both sides of the River Eden immediately beneath the weir. This is prime fishing territory and salmon, trout and grayling abound in this special stretch of river. Fishing rights are exclusively for castle guests.

Appleby is built in the curve of the River Eden and is a traditional medieval town with the castle at the top of the hill sloping gently downhill to the church. This is one of the prettiest market towns in England and despite once being the county town of Westmorland, it retains a village atmosphere with a great deal of interest and charm. One of it’s famous residents, the father of George Washington, Augustine Washington, grew up in Cumberland and attended Appleby Grammar School with his elder brother John. Situated in the beautiful Eden Valley, the location is superb for exploring the highlights of the North of England as it separates the Lakes District fells from the Pennines and also gives easy access to the Yorkshire and Durham Dales. The scenic Carlisle to Settle railway route runs through Appleby and makes a great day out. Further afield, the Northumberland National Park along with Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Border are within an hour’s drive. Superb walking, cycling, golf and fishing are all available nearby.

Cottage Three can be booked together with Cottage Two (CC132177) and Cottage One (CC132176) to accommodate up to 12 guests.
