Dive into the Culture of Metropolitan Tyne and Wear
Tyne and Wear is an exciting urban escape for the visitor touring England. The county is nestled in the north east and includes South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland. Travellers interested in immersing themselves in English culture will find a vast treasure trove of memorable experiences to absorb here.
Take a Tour of the Underground
Many relics from times long past still survive in Tyne and Wear. The Victoria Tunnel is a popular point of interest that runs underneath the city of Newcastle. During the 19th century, this hidden pathway was used to transport coal in wagons. It later served as an air raid shelter for local citizens as the turmoil of World War II ripped through Europe.
Visitors can walk the tunnel and learn more about its many historic uses through guided tours. Reservations are required to see this highly rated landmark.
Discover Music in a Whole New Way
Musicians and music lovers should include a visit to the Sage Gateshead during their stay in Tyne and Wear. This uniquely shaped venue showcases a wide range of musical talent with events hosted throughout the year. Claiming to be an “international home for music and musical discovery,” the stage here sees a diverse variety of performers ranging from Fleetwood Mac, Gretchen Peters, Amy Macdonald, Tony Emmanuel, Megson and many classical music inspired acts. Decade-specific shows and festivals are also scheduled. Visitors should contact the Sage Gateshead to learn more about concert and event dates.
Enjoy a Show at the Playhouse
The Playhouse can be found on Marine Avenue in Whitley Bay. The building is part of a major regeneration project commencing in this popular coastal area. 630 comfortable seats are available for each performance along with a 10 seat corporate viewing space. Many classic plays are scheduled, including timeless favourites like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Tell Me on a Sunday. Concerts, family events and stand-up comedy are also sometimes featured on the Playhouses’ calendar.
A Community of Many Tastes
There is much to see and do in Tyne and Wear. Traditionalists may prefer something more relaxed like a visit to St. Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay or the Tynemouth Castle and Priory in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sports fans may want to check out the Stadium of Light in Sunderland while naturalists can get a breath of fresh air at the Rising Sun County Park. Travellers should plan in advance so none of these unique landmarks are missed as they tour Tyne and Wear!
