Visit Bedfordshire – There's More To It Than Meets The Eye!
Flanked by tourist hotspots of Oxford to the west, Cambridge to the east and only a 35 minute train ride from London, the county of Bedford makes for the ideal place in which to base yourself. Many people use it as a bolt hole to explore other destinations. However if you're prepared to hang around for a while and explore, you'll uncover a part of the world that's quintessentially English.

Quaint chocolate box villages
Travel out of town for a few miles and follow the country lanes and you'll come across some of the prettiest 'chocolate box' villages in the country. Villages like Roxton, Elstow and Bidenham remain steeped in history and harp back to a time when the pace of life was a little less frenetic. Thatched cottages stand shoulder to shoulder like a row of dominoes and the village pub still remains the beating heart of the community.

Admire the splendour of Bedfordshire's Stately Homes
As well as quaint English villages Bedfordshire is home to two of the finest stately homes in the country. Woburn Abbey is probably the most well known of the two and is home to the current Duke of Bedford, Andrew Russell. Here the fabulous gardens designed by Humphrey Repton and the deer park are open daily to the public from March. Visitors can also take a look around the house itself. In addition Woburn Safari Park is a must see attraction where you can get up close and personal with all manner of exotic animals. Wrest Park is probably less well-known but equally as stunning with magnificent formal gardens inspired by the palace of Versailles.

Have fun at the zoo
If the Safari park at Woburn gives you a yearning to be closer to animals, then you'll love Whipsnade Zoo. Situated near Dunstable it's the largest zoo in the country and is set in 600 acres of glorious countryside in and around the Chiltern hills. Home to over 2500 animals (many of which are rare endangered species) the zoo remains a great day out for all ages.

Enjoy the culture
If a slice of culture is more your thing, then situated in the very heart of Bedford close to the Castle Mound lies the Cultural Quarter. Here you can find the Bedford museum, the John Bunyan Museum (writer of Pilgrim's progress), the Bedford Gallery and the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, all of which showcase a rich tapestry of Bedford life past and present.

Although Bedfordshire may well be one of the UK's smallest counties, if you peel back the layers you'll unveil a county that's full of history, fun and adventure.
