Swallows Nest is the ideal holiday cottage, tucked away in the rolling downlands of the Oxfordshire/Berkshire borders. It is perfectly placed to provide a tranquil haven for horse enthusiasts, walkers and cyclists. Wantage is approximately 5 miles from Swallow’s Nest, and lies in the heart of Oxfordshire. The quaint market town is a short distance from The Vale of White Horse, and has a variety of shops from stylish evening wear to local food producers. There is also a vast range of places to eat and drink. Wantage has great historic values, which shows through its 17th and 18th-century buildings and charming features. It is believed that King Alfred was born here in 849AD and a memorial statue was commissioned by Lord Wantage, in 1877. It stands today as a huge centre piece and attraction in the town market place. A local market is held every Saturday and Wednesday, creating a warm community feel within the town. However, for those seeking activity, then try the ancient Ridgeway National Trail which is just 2¼ miles out of town. Newbury is only a short 14-mile drive away, enjoy a day at the races, luxurious shops or spa treatments. The Newbury area has a wealth of great days out for all the family to enjoy. Visitors can experience fun times for families at Beale Park, Bucklebury Farm Park and Krazy Klub Activity Centre. Feel history brought alive at Basildon Park, Shaw House and Highclere Castle, or be entertained at one of three theatres in and around the town. Superb fishing is available on the River Kennet, inspiring walks across the Berkshire Downs or relaxing trips on the Kennet and Avon Canal. You can also explore Donnington Castle, Greenham Common and Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre. Further afield is Oxford, where a range of luxury boat trips, sightseeing tours and unique picnic cruises are available. The University Museum of Natural History houses Oxford University’s extensive collections of entomological, geological, mineralogical and zoological material of international importance. Blenheim Palace is set in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and is considered to be one of the finest baroque houses in the country. Shop 4 miles, pub 5 miles.
