In the midst of 1066 countryside and in a farm setting with glorious rural views across rolling fields (AONB), is The Oast. it was originally used for ’kilning’ – or drying hops in the beer making process: the hops were spread out and dried by hot air produced from a charcoal fired kiln. The heat would escape through a cowl in the roof which turned with the wind. The Oast has been thoughtfully restored and is a cosy, detached, holiday base with a woodburner, from which you can explore the surrounding area. Visit Battle with its abbey, and see the site that changed the course of British history, where you can walk in the steps of King Harold and William the Conqueror. Hastings, with its iconic net huts and smuggling haunts, Rye used as the film set for the dramatisation of E F Benson’s novel Mapp & Lucia, and Tenterden – The Jewel of the Weald - are all within a short drive. An excellent area renowned for award-winning wines - try some tastings at Sedlescombe Vineyard, Carr Taylor and Chapel Down. For garden enthusiasts, visit Sissinghurst and Scotney Castle. Take a trip on the Kent and East Sussex steam railway to the fairytale moated Bodiam Castle. Beach 10 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
