Overlooking the picturesque fishing harbour in the historic village of Helmsdale, Selkie House was built in the 19th century at the height of the herring industry. With high ceilings and large windows that drink in the ever-changing sea views, this traditional house has been modernised, yet it still keeps some original features. It offers attractive and welcoming accommodation for families and groups. Miles of shoreline walks are accessed directly from the property; fossils are regularly found along this particular stretch of coast. Fishermen still fish for lobster, crabs and clams along this coast and visitors can often purchase fresh local shellfish direct from the boats. Helmsdale has a good selection of local restaurants and small shops, as well as a fascinating museum detailing the unusual history of the area, including the 19th century gold rush. There is also a 9-hole golf course within walking distance. This region is renowned for its unspoilt beaches, wild and rugged coastline and traditional villages. Travel north to visit the Castle of Mey, John O’ Groats and the Orkney Isles. Golf, fishing, cycling, hill walking, surfing, kayaking and pony trekking are all local pastimes. Try panning for gold in the Helmsdale River and visit the fairytale castle of Dunrobin. The local area is also renowned for its wildlife. Beach walks often afford sightings of otters and seals, and wild deer, golden eagles and red kites are seen in the nearby hills.
