The Teesdale poet once lived next door. Nearby are the picturesque Low Force (canoeing by permit), Bowlees Visitor Centre and the dramatic High Force (England’s highest waterfall). Within easy reach are Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum and Raby Castle. Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham, York and the Lakes provide excellent days out. Upper Teesdale is beautifully wild and noted for its flora (gentians, hay meadows) and its breeding birds. Middleton-in-Teesdale, 3 miles with tea rooms, inns and small shops. Pub ¼mile.
