In the delightful Friston Forest village of Westdean, these carefully converted Grade II listed barns with exposed beams date back to 1597 and are double award winning (award for excellent conversion of a 16thC listed ox barn). Now a Christmas tree and apple juice farm it was once owned by Alfred the Great. Free archaeology and history tour available for guests. Recent excavations revealed that the site had Neolithic occupation circa 2700BC, and an Elizabethan terrace and Jacobean banqueting house, the centre of a wider holding mentioned in Domesday Book which stretched from the River Cuckmere to Jevington. There are also ruins of an Elizabethan manor house, restored 14th century dovecote and ox farmyard of the 18th and 19th century. Quebec Barn (ref 26956) was used as local headquarters by Canadian forces in WW ll. Walking plus cycle trails (hire centre, ½ mile). Seven Sisters Country Park, 1 mile, and a secluded beach 1½ miles. Enjoy wildlife in the South Downs National Park. Horse riding stables, 5 miles at the old smuggling village of Alfriston. Visit Brighton and the historical ’Lanes’, Eastbourne and stroll along the Victorian pier, Drusillas Zoo, Beachy Head and Glyndebourne (opera in the grounds during the summer) within 5 miles. Pevensey Castle, Battle and 1066 country within 10 miles. Shops 4 miles, pubs 11/2 miles. Properties (refs 19748, 19749 and 26956) can be booked together for larger parties.
