Dating from 1880, Easel Cottage sits on the highest point of South Horrington village, just outside the medieval city of Wells, affording it a superb viewpoint towards King’s Castle Wood.
In its former function, the cottage was part of the Mendip Hospital, and used as a porter’s lodge and staff quarters. Lovingly brought back to life without losing its original charm, it retains original doors and windows, with the addition of modern comforts.
Whilst renovating Easel Cottage, the owners have collected some weird and wonderful finds, including unopened 1960s medication, shoes, Victorian glass and hospital meal menus. The cottage was originally attached by a bridge to the main house (Mendip House), which is currently inhabited by the cottage owners. Mendip House is also the home of the owner’s gallery business. The walls of Easel Cottage benefit from housing a selection from the art collection, providing a visually rich, unique style to every room. It is an art lover’s paradise – your own private gallery for the duration, with the works adorning the walls available for purchase. The gallery business’ network of local artists means that the owner can also organise art workshops/activities/instruction if visitors are inclined.
A short stroll from Easel Cottage will find you in the heart of South Horrington, which between 1848–1991 was the Mendip Hospital. The original hospital was built to house 400 patients and staff. The principal architect was George Gilbert Scott, who is better known for his designs of St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial in London. Wells Cricket Club is based in South Horrington, with Wells Golf Club’s beautiful 18-hole parkland course at the foot of the village.
Shrubs, trees and flowers adorn the cottage garden, attracting a myriad of birds which fill the air with birdsong. Situated alongside Easel Cottage, visitors will also have use of the owner’s private Bluebell Wood, and you may be lucky enough to spot the deer that wander through occasionally.
There are some glorious walks emanating directly from the cottage. Wells Cathedral, Bishop’s Palace and Vicar’s Close are 11/2 miles away and can be accessed via a picturesque walk running alongside Wells Golf Course. Other routes take the walker past King’s Wood through to Dulcote and Dinder. There is also a good selection of independent restaurants located in Wells.
Conveniently placed for visits to Glastonbury Abbey and Tor, the beauty of the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves. Within an easy drive, guests can reach the cities of Bath and Bristol, as well as the coastal resorts and sandy beaches at Weston-Super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea and Brean Sands. Shop and pub within 1 mile.

Living room with electric cast iron stove and wooden floor. Hallway dining area with stone floor. Kitchen. Two double bedrooms; both with 5ft beds, one zip & link. Single bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.
