Dora’s Cottage is beautifully placed for enjoying this wonderful, scenic area of the Machars Peninsula with many beautiful sandy beaches and coves to explore. The cottage was originally part of the Barnbarroch Estate and housed the weaver for the estate in around the 1850’s.

The nearby Galloway Forest Park is the UK’s largest at three hundred square miles and is a mixture of lochs, moorland, hills and is a habitat for a variety of plants and animals. A great introduction to the Forest Park is the drive along the Queen’s Way. This is a very scenic route linking Newton Stewart with Scotland’s smallest Burgh, New Galloway. The road holds lovely surprises as it winds its way through magnificent scenery. Wild goats thrive on the rocky outcrops as do red deer, allowing an opportunity to see these elusive animals up close. The Forest Park has been designated a Dark Sky Park, and offers outstanding opportunities for star gazing. Several of the 7Stanes mountain biking trails are easily accessible from Dora’s Cottage at Kirroughtree and Glentrool. There are outstanding gardens open at Castle Kennedy, Logan Botanical Garden and Glenwhan. The nearby town of Wigtown is Scotland’s national book town and hosts a book festival in late September.
