Braynesmead cottage was built in the 1480’s and is apparently the oldest building in the village of Cuckfield. Full of character with an inglenook fireplace, low beams and steep creaky stairs. The garden is fully private and enclosed with a summerhouse as well as a raised outside dining area. The village of Cuckfield was on the main London to Brighton coaching route and once boasted 7 pubs and inns as up to 50 coaches a day would stop for accommodation, refreshments and change of horses, but when Haywards Heath was selected for the railway route, Cuckfield has remained unchanged, except there are now only 4 pubs. Cuckfield is said to be one of the prettiest Tudor villages in Britain and has a lot to explore from boutique shops, coffee and tea shops and Ockenden Manor, an Elizabethan manor house with Michelin star restaurant and spa. All 4 pubs serve food from pub grub to fine dining. From the cottage, which sits on the north end of the village, you can access public footpaths to other villages all with pubs serving food and less than 2 hours’ walk through the High Weald countryside. The South Downs National Park is only 20 minutes away at Clayton Windmills where there is parking. There are many historic homes and gardens close by including Wakehurst Place, Nymans Garden NT and only a 20-minute walk across the fields is Borde Hill, a Tudor mansion with 200 acres of gardens and woodland. If golf is your game, Cuckfield Golf Centre is only a ½ mile walk from the cottage which has a 18 hole course overlooking the High Weald, or you can visit Haywards Heath Golf Club, 3½ miles away. There is good shopping within 30 minutes of Cuckfield, with Lewes, Brighton and Horsham, all with their own unique character and boutique shops. Other attractions close by are the Bluebell Steam Railway, Glynbourne and Hickstead for polo or showjumping. Gatwick airport is only 30 minutes away and Haywards Heath railway station, on the main London to Brighton line, is only 3 miles with over 70 trains a day to London Bridge and Victoria Station, both taking around 45 minutes on the fast trains. The train service to Brighton is only 20 minutes. Shop 50 yards, pub and restaurant 220 yards.
