Co. Tipperary or Tiobraid Arann, meaning the well of Era in reference to the river Ara, is nestled between counties Cork and Limerick and dubbed the “golden vale” of Irelands midlands, famous for its horse breeding industry.

The nearest airport is Shannon, in Co. Clare which fly’s to both transatlantic and U.K destinations, offering car rental along with frequent bus services to Limerick city centre which is 24km away, which in turn has connections to all other major bus routes, and also the national railway service located on Parnell Street in Limerick City centre. The M7 motorway runs through the northern part of the county and links other parts of the country, and is among some of the busiest roads in Ireland.

The county lies amid the basin of the River Suir and is steeped in a deeply historical setting which houses the Mitchelstown caves. The caves are the longest caves of their kind in Ireland spanning 3km of well lit, natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites, ideal for the underground adventurer and are open all year round for all the family. Other main attractions include the Rock of Cashel, which is a spectacular group of medieval buildings which are set on a limestone hill overlooking the surrounding area. You will also find Cahir Castle, which is one of the best preserved castles in Ireland sitting on a rocky island on the River Suir. Both these historic sites offer an excellent audio-visual show which gives visitors a more in-depth knowledge of the main sites.

The national bus service, along with other private companies run services to and from the castle dropping off in front of the war memorial, a short walk from the castle itself. There is limited access however for visitors with disabilities and you may want to call ahead of time to check on accommodation of specific needs.

Cahir town also offers a good selection of shops ranging from local produce and supermarkets to clothing, local gifts and crafts.

Other attractions include the Thurles Famine Museum, which gives a glimpse into the great famine that spanned 4 years from 1845, as well as the Tipperary Crystal factory. The factory combines old, hand crafted methods of production, which visitors can witness first hand and is set inside two authentic thatched Irish cottages. Take in the sights at the Dundrum Plantarum which sports many thousands of varieties and species of plants, 6 acres of shrubbery and lakes that includes a 2 mile walk through the estate.

There is no shortage of traditional Irish pubs, which provide a great pint and live entertainment ranging from folk music and singers to just having the “craic” with the locals. Clonmel is the largest town in the county located to the south and Nenagh to the north, providing the biggest collection of bars, bistros and restaurants, serving a wide variety of food like Mediterranean tapas to the more traditional Irish cuisine. There is something for everyone at all times of the day including coffee and light lunches to local seafood.

You will also find a range of hotels, Bed & Breakfast and self-catering accommodation scattered throughout the county, ranging in price with some better deals to be had during the autumn and winter months.
