County Mayo Holiday Cottages

County Mayo, with its wind-swept coastal scenery and many islands, is steeped in both folklore and religious history. Here on Ireland’s beautiful and craggy west coast, you can brave the elements on a dramatic oceanfront walk, learn to sail in the shadow of legendary mountains or delight in the refinement of Westport House, one of the country’s most celebrated historic homes.

On the Right Track
If you want to enjoy the full splendour of Mayo’s coast and countryside then there are few better starting points than the Great Western Greenway. It’s a combined walking and cycling trail that has opened in stages since 2010, and stretches for 42 kilometres next to Clew Bay, across rivers and through inspiring landscapes, with lovely views of the Nephin Mountains. Interestingly, it follows the former track of the old Westport-Achill Rail line, which closed in 1936.

Watersports are a Breeze
One of Ireland’s westernmost counties, Mayo is exposed to exhilarating breezes, which is music to the ears of wind-surfers and sailors. For beginners the place to go is undoubtedly Clew Bay. This inlet extends for several kilometres into the mainland, and is peppered with several small green islands, which means the water is calm and ideal for sailing. Keelboats are favoured by competitive souls who want to taste the thrill of racing.

Dinghies are perfect for newcomers who would rather take their time to admire the untamed beauty of Clew Bay and indulge in a bit of island hopping. Mayo Sailing Club is located right here, in Rosmoney, and has a fun and varied schedule of activities open to visitors.

Legendary Croagh Patrick
This formidable mountain stands at 764 metres and commands stunning views of Clew Bay. But it’s an important landmark in its own right. St. Patrick is said to have fasted on its peak for 40 days in the 600s, and it is from here that he is said to have rid Ireland of snakes, by hurling a silver bell down the mountain’s slopes.

Cultured Westport House
This elegant residence in the town of the same name dates to the 1700s and is among the most beautiful buildings of its kind to be open to the public in Ireland. It was constructed with a distinctive limestone quarried locally, and its preserved interiors are lavishly furnished and well worth exploring.

This is one stately home that the kids will love too, because the building’s extensive grounds are home to the Pirate Adventure Park, one of Ireland’s top family attractions. It’s packed with rides like the Pirates Plunge Log Flume and the Swinging Ship, as well as smaller amusements like pedalo boats on the lake and pitch & putt.
