County Limerick Holiday Cottages

Nestled between County Clare to the north, and County Cork to the south, County Limerick offers the scenic beauty we have come to expect from Ireland. From the great Manor House of Adare, to the thatched roof cottages that are typical of the Irish countryside, to King John’s Castle and Castle Oliver, County Limerick offers sights and sounds to enchant every visitor. As you might guess, the county is named for the city of Limerick, which is situated near the end of a long inland port.; The county is mainly a flat, fertile, verdant area featuring that Irish Green grass we have come to know from the many photographs of this lovely country.

There is much besides the sea of green to see in County Limerick. Adare Manor is one of the great 19th Century manor houses. It was built in the early 1700’s and occupied by nobles until the late 20th Century, when its owners could no longer afford to maintain it. It is now a hotel – one of the great hotels of the world, featuring one of the great boutique golf courses of the world, designed by Bobby Jones. For the sports-minded, it features Cricket grounds, as well.

Much of King John’s Castle remains today. Built in the late 1100’s, the area was settled by Vikings at the end of the 990’s. A settlement was uncovered on the castle grounds, and is part of the attraction. The castle sits on the River Shannon and features beautiful views of the waterway.

If one castle isn’t enough, Croom Castle, dating from the 1200’s is also in the county. If you like your castles more “modern,” there is Castle Oliver, a Victorian castle designed, not for protection, but for entertainment. It features magnificent stained glass windows, a gigantic ballroom, hand-painted ceilings, and all the touches that make a Victorian castle a thrill to the senses. It is available for weddings and private parties.

A visit to County Limerick would not be complete without a visit to the Foynes Flying Boat Museum. Foynes was a famous aviation centre during WWII. The list of people who visited was a who’s who of the literary, entertainment, and political world. The museum also has an actual plane on display. Its real fame, though, rests with a concoction we all know (and love?): Irish Coffee. It was invented in Foynes.

So come and drink up the beauty and charm of County Limerick. It’s here waiting for you.
