It is not possible to spend time in a part of the Republic of Ireland that stretches further north than Northern Ireland itself. County Donegal takes its name from the Irish word for ‘Fort of the Foreigners’, which was located within Donegal town itself and the county has the longest coastline in Eire at more than 1100 km – ideal for those who want to take in the sea air. You may hear County Donegal referred to as the forgotten county but this is because in tourism terms it is not as developed as others, but this is precisely why so many people like it.

So what does the county have to offer? If you are the active type then the answer to this is ‘plenty’! Sporting activities include fishing, rock-climbing, golf, water sports and hiking.  The landscape is ideal for those who want to spend time exploring off the beaten track and you can even try a bit of surfing if you are lucky enough to be spending time along the Atlantic coast.

Tourists are drawn to the area because of the amazing scenery, particularly along the coast. Visit some of the highest sea cliffs that Europe has to offer in the form of the Slieve League cliffs and plenty of people try their hand at rock climbing in the Derryveagh Mountains. There are easier climbs than Mount Errigal though, the highest point in the county. Alternatives include Lough Salt Mountain but you still get to enjoy amazing views. Anyone interested in nature will find plenty to keep them occupied in the Glenveagh National Park with climbs and walks as well as landscaped gardens and the castle grounds.

Others might want to find out what the towns have to offer. Letterkenny is the place to go for a little retail therapy and some lively nightlife. Alternatively you could head for Bundoran – a seaside resort town similar to England’s Blackpool where you can surf or spend time in the amusement arcades. This is a great place for a family holiday and in the summer the beaches attract visitors of all ages.

Mainland County Donegal is not the only place you could be visiting. The island of Arranmore is close to the mainland and has some attractions for tourists including water sports, hiking trails and a number of historic ruins.

The pub culture in the county is not to be missed. During the summer you may get to listen to live music while you enjoy your drink and the friendly atmosphere will be hard to find elsewhere. Ireland’s favourite drink – Guinness – is widely available and should be tried at least once!
