County Clare is situated on the southwest coast of the Republic of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Among its towns and villages is Shannon, perhaps best known for its bottlenose dolphins.

The weather in the county is milder than most of the country, with a mean temperature of between 9o and 12o Celsius. The wind tends to be a gentle to moderate breeze, and gales are rare.

The County boasts of its remarkable coastline that includes the limestone Cliffs of Moher, a mecca for birdwatchers. The precipice, which towers more than 200m (660’) above the north Atlantic, is home to nearly two dozen kinds of nesting birds.

There’s plenty to do in County Clare.
The Burren College of Art and Julie Douglas Art offer painting classes, a boon for budding artists who want to be capture their impressions of the outstanding countryside.

Also in Burren are the Aillwee Caves and Birds of Prey Centre.

The caves are particularly unusual in that they are set high on the mountainside, rather than underneath it. The guided visit takes about 30 minutes and includes such spectacles as the Midsummer Cavern, Mud Hall, and conical stalactites, called The Carrots.

The primary mission of the Birds Prey Centre is to conserve raptors, such as owls, falcons, hawks, and eagles. But audiences continue to be enthralled by their flying demonstrations.

At the Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, visitors can explore the 15th century fortress that has been restored to its former glory. It’s filled with hundreds of items, furniture and tapestries, paintings and objets d’art. The castle is surrounded by 26 acres of parkland that contains a 19th century village in which a number of people in period dress greet 21st century visitors.

In July, the Willie Clancy Summer School offers classes in traditional Irish dance and music, as well as a number of exhibitions.

But, one of the most unusual events you’re likely to attend is the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival held each September. This month-long event, attended by 20,000 people, is for those who hope to experience a bit of romance. There are dances throughout the week, horseracing, and a competition for the Queen of the Burren.

Sports feature, too, in County Clare. The Gaelic Athletic Association oversees most the official recreational activities for the County, where hurling, “described as field hockey in the air” and Gaelic football are most popular.

Not to be outdone, the County Clare Cricket Club was the division champion in 2009 and 2012.
