Dating back to 1350 with exposed timbers, brickwork and an impressive fireplace with woodburner, this enchanting Grade II listed, end of terrace cottage with surprisingly good ceiling heights, is located a short stroll from Mayfield High Street, with its pubs, coffee shops, florist, bakers, deli, butchers and fine dining eateries. Described as one of the finest villages in East Sussex, the medieval buildings were funded by the profits of the 16th and 17th century Sussex Iron Industry. Famous for the legend of St Dunstan, formerly a blacksmith who said to have tweaked off the devils nose with a fire iron! Come and see the Mayfield Bonfire Boys and Belles, one of the oldest bonfire organisations in the country, who arrange a noisy, colourful torch light procession and firework display in the Autumn, taking you back to 1550 and the Sussex Martyrs and the start of this tradition. Once the iron industry faded Mayfield became a hotbed of smuggling, known as ‘owlers’ the farmers smuggled wool out of the country and returned with brandy and silk! Mayfield also holds a bi-annual festival including classical, jazz and Broadway music with lectures and an art exhibition. An excellent walking and cycling territory with a 3 mile circular walk around the village or slightly further afield, explore the Cuckoo Trail, Bewl Water and Bedgebury Pinetum. Battle Abbey, Batemans, Rudyard Kipling’s home (NT) and Charleston Farm house are well worth visiting. Enjoy beautiful walks with over 50 miles of footpaths and bridal ways, where there are many historical sites to be seen along the way. Nearby, there is a large park with plenty to do for the children. Train enthusiasts can take a journey on the Bluebell Railway or the Kent and East Sussex steam railway. Fishing and golf are also available locally. The Spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells is 10 miles. Good rail links from Wadhurst to London where you will arrive in an hour. Beaches at Eastbourne and Brighton, 23 miles. Shop 150 yards, pub and restaurant 15 yards.
