However, Sir Walter Raleigh built his own property on the site in 1594. After his death it was purchased by Sir John Digby and has been in the family ever since. In addition to its early life, the castle played a pivotal role in both world wars, as a Red Cross hospital and as the headquarters for the commandos of the D-Day landings.
