Situated in the village of Wetwang in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, The Old Vicarage is full of fascinating history, built by the diocese of York in 1864 and originally owned by the Archbishop of York right up until the 1950s. This richly historical detached dwelling has since been called home by just three families including that of a master mariner. The interior retains many original architectural features including working shutters and fireplaces in most ground floor rooms, moulded cornicing and panelled doors. Visible in the dining room and bedrooms are the bell pushes that would have been used to alert the servants to the needs of the family. This house is full of Upstairs, Downstairs moments, whether wandering around the top floor rooms with their tiny fireplaces that undoubtedly once sheltered the household staff, or perhaps trying to imagine the hustle and bustle of the back staircase (now the pantry). Or, you may be intrigued by the outbuildings where the original cobbles, ladders and trapdoors for the stable boy are discernable beneath the veneer of 21st-century living. This holiday home is perfect for families to meet up and enjoy the spacious house and one and a half acres of grounds. The grounds are all fenced making it ideal for children and dogs with great hiding places and plenty of space to run around in. There is also a games room provided outside to keep the children and teenagers entertained. The Old Vicarage is conveniently located on the A166 York to Bridlington road, making Wetwang a great base to make the most of what Yorkshire has to offer. With the Wolds on the doorstep, famous for the David Hockney paintings, and the North York Moors just to the north of the property, guests are very central for visiting all the attractions.
The medieval city of York is just half an hour away boasting the minster, one of the greatest cathedrals in the world. The Railway Museum, the Jorvik Viking Centre, Cliffords Tower and The Shambles are just a few places worth a visit. Take a leisurely pleasure cruise along the river or walk the medieval city walls surrounding the city. As well as many restaurants, bars, theatres and a fantastic shopping area, there is something for everybody. The nearest seaside resort is Bridlington on the east coast, and from there visitors have access to Whitby, Scarborough and Filey, right down to the resort of Hornsea. There are many award winning beaches, perfect for all the family. The holiday property is close to the beautiful Sledmere Estate where guests can visit the house and its wonderful gardens. The area has lots of stately homes to visit with Sewerby Hall, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard all just a short drive away. Flamborough Head and RSPB Bempton Cliffs are 40 minutes by car and boast fantastic opportunities to observe puffins, gannets, dolphins and seals in their natural habitat. Along the coast at Scarborough you have the Stephen Joseph Theatre which is known for its premieres of almost all of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays. It also boasts the largest open air theatre in Europe. For that perfect family holiday, The Old Vicarage is just ideal, and is decorated with a Christmas theme during the festive season! Shop 2 miles and pub/restaurant 600 yards.
