Historical & Heritage Sites
St Columba's Church is a late 14th century church and served as the main church in medieval times in Lewis. It is located close to the main town of Stornoway on a sandy strait. It was constructed by the MacLeods and was committed to Colmcille and is of major importance to the area, with a long and interesting history. During the 15th and 16th century, it underwent further extension. The church was originally rectangular in shape with a burial ground on both the north and south sides. Owing to the erosion of the coastline only the south burial ground still exists. The church is under threat of being lost to the sea and substantial fundraising and work is being undertaken to protect this important piece of Stornoway history. Although the building is a ruin, it has much to offer from lovely views to some interesting carved stone grave markers. There are information boards and leaflets available to explain the history of this medieval church. St Columba's Church has a lovely romantic and atmospheric feel about it and well worth a visit if you are in the area, a lovely piece of history.
