Lovingly renovated, this beautiful oak framed Sussex barn conversion stands detached, and was originally built in the 1800s. It is an ideal base for two couples or a family, as both bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom. Beamed throughout and boasting solar underfloor heating with the benefit of a wood-burning stove in the part-galleried living space, guests will feel relaxed in these stylish surroundings, whatever the weather. The holiday property is situated in the owner’s 37½-acre grounds, surrounded by fields with sheep, geese, ducks and chickens, and the owner also has a shrub and perennial nursery. Guests have sole use of the orchard area. Herstmonceux is not only home to the hands-on Observatory Science Centre housed amongst the domes and telescopes of the former Royal Greenwich Observatory, there is the magnificent Herstmonceux Castle where a stroll can be taken around the Elizabethan gardens. The town also produces Henner’s medal-winning sparkling wine. Because Sussex has a sunny climate and chalky subsoil (the same as that in Champagne in France), the county also produces wonderful sparkling wines. If the beach calls, head for Pevensey where the Romans landed, and you can tackle the beautiful 31-mile 1066 Country Walk which starts at Pevensey via Herstmonceux, and on to Battle and then the Cinque Port town of Rye. Golf and fishing lakes close by. Trains to London from Polegate. Beach 8 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1¼ miles.

Four steps to entrance. Beamed, open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove, French doors and well equipped kitchen area with travertine marble floor. Cloakroom with toilet. Open-tread, oak stairs to first floor (open to one side): Galleried landing. Two beamed bedrooms, each with travertine marble floor and en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet; one double and one twin.
