Perched on the edge of the seaside town of St Leonards-on-Sea and adjoining Hastings, Applewood Lodge was originally built in the 1920s and now offers an imposing holiday villa, with plenty of space, and an enclosed garden complete with terrace and fishpond. It lies 1½ miles from the pebbly beach offering sandy strolls at low tide, and is a great opportunity for exploring the rock pools. Situated in the heart of ’1066 country’, visit Battle Abbey and see the atmospheric ruins where visitors can walk in the footsteps of William Duke of Normandy and the Saxon King Harold. Experience the famous battlefield where the course of English history was forever changed with audio tours and interactive exhibits. The town of Battle also has some interesting galleries, tea shops and antique shops. Visit Hastings, the home to the first castle that William the Conqueror built, with the Whispering Dungeons or see one of the richest displays of shipwrecks at low tide, where visitors can discover more at the Shipwreck Heritage Centre. There is also a preserved Old Town, and where a strong arts community thrives, such as the Jerwood Art Gallery housing 20th and 21st century British art. Relive the dangers that faced the Hastings smugglers and tour the labyrinth of tunnels at St Clements Caves. Further afield and within a short drive is Rye, Bexhill, Eastbourne and Camber Sands. Beach 1½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
